Temporary position - July to mid-August



Position Summary

Camp Kindness at Catskill Animal Sanctuary engages young people in a vibrant day program designed to foster compassion and respect for all living beings and the environment. Camp runs Monday through Friday, July 9 to August 10 and takes place on Sanctuary grounds in Saugerties, New York, with mandatory training July 2-6. The Educator will co-lead camp with the Youth Program Manager, guiding youth aged 8–14 through enriching experiences with the animals, critical-thinking exercises, crafts, games, culinary activities, and much more. The curriculum covers issues related to the plight of farmed animals, animal protection, humane choices, and vegan nutrition.



  • Complete any necessary training with sanctuary staff prior to summer program, including safety around sanctuary animals, learning about sanctuary residents and their stories, understanding daily schedule for caregivers to help plan curriculum, and any other identified needs
  • Assist in various preparations leading up to Camp sessions including materials preparation, collaboration on curriculum refinement, and organization of supplies
  • Deliver Camp Kindness curriculum in collaboration with other staff and under the direction of the Youth Programs Manager
  • Supervise interns and volunteers as needed to delegate tasks and ensure that they are adequately prepared to help execute daily schedule
  • Collaborate in setting up and maintaining Camp program space, including decorating, cleaning, and setup for the season; cleaning and maintenance during sessions; ensuring adequate program materials and supplies are organized and available; and cleaning and resetting space at the end of each week
  • Collaborate with other sanctuary staff to ensure the safe, effective, and positive delivery of the summer program



  • College graduate and a minimum of two years teaching experience strongly preferred
  • Completion of Humane Education training or knowledge of humane education highly desirable
  • Experience with children ages 8-14 in a formal or informal capacity (including classroom settings, tutoring, nature centers or parks, day care, etc.)
  • An understanding of age-appropriate information and activities for children of various ages, as well as age-appropriate ways to communicate with them
  • A commitment to vegan living and knowledge of issues surrounding the plight of farmed animals and the impact of our food choices on animal suffering, the environment, and human health
  • Team player with excellent relationship-building skills, listening skills, professional maturity, and sound judgment
  • Effective supervisory skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proven ability to multitask, manage details, and be flexible and adaptable
  • First aid and/or CPR training is a plus (Catskill can assist in certification if you are not certified already)
