Job Description

PETA is looking for a thoughtful, clever and creative animal rights advocate to advance the Cruelty Investigations Department (CID)’s work through writing in various formats for a wide range of audiences and editing colleagues’ writing. The ideal candidate will be a champion for animals; have professional writing experience; be extremely organized and have a keen eye for detail and accuracy; and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

Position Objective: 

To write clever and creative copy for PETA’s Cruelty Investigations Department 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Write copy for CID projects and cases—sometimes on tight deadlines—including:

     o Persuasive letters to local, state and federal legislators; law enforcement officials and regulatory agencies; businesses; and others

     o Longer-form Web features and blogs 

     o Action alerts and e-mail alerts

     o Letters to the editor and op-eds 

     o Departmental reports

• Conduct research, as needed, to inform copy

• Review other CID staffers’ written work for quality assurance/fact-checking purposes, and edit for accuracy, brevity, tone, etc. 

• Assist with review of social media posts and other texts that reference CID’s work

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor


• Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience working in a professional environment

• Minimum of one year of professional writing experience; newspaper or magazine writing experience preferable

• Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns

• Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines 

• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion

• Willingness to obtain knowledge of animal care and animal protection laws 

• Willingness and ability to work occasionally on scheduled weekends and/or weeknights 

• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle

• Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues in a professional manner

• Commitment to the objectives of the organization


The hourly pay range for this position is $17.40 - $21.36 per hour. The ultimate hourly pay within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
