Job Description

Farm Sanctuary is home to approximately 1,000 farm animals, many of whom were rescued from abuse and neglect, across its two sanctuaries in Watkins Glen, NY and Acton, CA.  At Farm Sanctuary they are given refuge, rehabilitation, and a lifetime of personalized care. The Sanctuary Veterinarian (SV) is responsible for providing and supporting high-quality medical care to multiple species in collaboration with a team of dedicated and experienced caregivers and operations staff. The Sanctuary Veterinarian is a specialized position on the Shelter Leadership Team, a multidisciplinary team focused on excellence in all aspects of animal care and environment. The SV reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). 


  • Partners with Shelter Management team to assess, revise, and implement standard care protocols. Highlights opportunities and risks associated with protocols and projects. 
  • Advises on appropriate treatments and processes for a high-volume caseload.
  • Leads relationship management with external animal healthcare providers and interacts effectively with veterinary specialists and referral institutions. 
  • Serves as a strategic thought partner in the development and implementation of a professional development structure and pipeline for caregiving and facilities staff. 
  • Collaborates with Animal Care Managers to train and support caregiving staff in performing treatments and maintaining a standard level of care through specific task/skill training.
  • Advises and consults with the Shelter Management team on difficult or complex cases, and participates in Shelter healthcare rounds, performs physical examinations, conducts testing, and assesses results as needed. 
  • Leads risk management strategy for animal care, including oversight of controlled substances and orders and management of prescriptions and medications onsite.
  • Partners with the Director of Research to inform the design and implementation of non-invasive, sanctuary-based research studies at Farm Sanctuary contributing to the body of research on the emotional, social, and cognitive lives of farm animals.
  • Represents Farm Sanctuary in DVM Meetings and to donors and members of the public, as required.
  • Performs other duties and strategic consulting as assigned by the COO or as determined by the Shelter Leadership Team. 


  • A New York State Veterinary License in good standing and willingness to continue to meet licensing requirements. 
  • Commitment to approaching care from a sanctuary/animal welfare perspective and providing the highest quality of care to animal residents. 
  • Strong skills in conventional medicine, diagnostics, and healthcare record-keeping standards.
  • Experience working with farm animals as a large animal, small animal, or avian specialist and comfort with and ability to develop expertise working with all species in Farm Sanctuary’s care (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpacas, llamas, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese).
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while effectively managing multiple projects with creativity and flexibility.
  • Confidence and ability to work independently, while maintaining consistent communication with the Shelter Management team and others.
  • Collaborative and motivated to work well as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team. Committed to drawing upon the experience and expertise of the team.
  • High emotional intelligence and excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, positive attitude, and team orientation.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.

Job Specifications:

  • Full time, exempt position
  • The position is based in Watkins Glen, NY, with periodic travel locally in the Watkins Glen area and to Acton, CA required
