Job Description

Position Summary:

Spend your summer at Catskill Animal Sanctuary, a home for rescued farmed animals, helping children connect with our 300 animal residents, each other, and their inner sense of compassion!

The Counselor Intern will assist with Camp Kindness and CK Teens, weekly day programs for children ages 8-16 that focus on fostering compassion for all living beings. This internship provides an opportunity to work at a unique summer program that encourages children to learn about the plight of farmed animals as well as how they are similar to humans, and explore more compassionate choices. Activities include time with the animals, making food, providing animal care, games, activities, and discussions. Interns in this role are crucial for providing a safe and fun environment for the children and youth who we serve.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completing pre-camp training to learn about the sanctuary, the animal residents, compassionate communication, safety procedures, etc.
  • Assisting Educators in leading activities and supervising children
  • Facilitating connections between children and the resident animals of the sanctuary
  • Ensuring that children have a positive, fun, and educational experience
  • Helping to set up the program room at the beginning of the day and cleaning up at the end of the day
  • Assist with food preparation and distribution during snack and lunch
  • Preparing the program space and materials prior to the program, and organizing and closing the space once the program is completed
  • Other tasks and duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Have experience working with children ages 8-16, or a subset of those ages, in a formal or informal group setting - summer camps, classrooms, parks, youth groups, etc.
  • An understanding of what is age-appropriate information for children of various ages, as well as age-appropriate ways to communicate said information
  • Be comfortable working with animals
  • Be willing to learn about and engage with our animal residents
  • Have an understanding of the philosophy and mission of Catskill Animal Sanctuary
  • Be able to follow detailed instructions and meet schedules
  • Be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with other interns, volunteers, and staff
  • Be available for training and preparations as well as all four weeks of the program, up to 40 hours per week
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Training in First Aid and/or CPR is a plus

    You must be able to commit to all four weeks of camp (July 8 to August 2), plus mandatory training during the first week of July. Interns are expected to work Monday through Friday for up to 40 hours per week.
