Charity Entrepreneurship London, UK/ Vancouver, Canada
Sep 02, 2019Full time
The position Charity Entrepreneurship (CE) is a research and training program aimed at creating multiple high-impact charities annually with a focus on a number of cause areas, including animal advocacy, mental health, and global health. The focus of the research will be on breadth and being applicable to recommending charities to be founded, much like the previous research that led to the founding of five poverty charities, two animal advocacy charities, and one mental health charity, including Charity Science Health and Fortify Health . There is an opening for a research analyst (RA) looking into the animal space. The position will have a large influence on the type and number of charities that get founded, as well as the total scope of topics covered. The RA will research a variety of potential interventions, compare them, do rapid literature reviews, consider crucial considerations, make cost-effectiveness analyses, and generally try to determine which would be the most high impact charities to start in the field. The RA will have high levels of cross-cutting responsibilities and will be expected to gain many new skills on the job. This is a great fit for somebody who has a great thirst for knowledge and an analytical bent. Impact This organization and job is entirely impact focused. The expected value of founding charities is high and this is a higher leverage way of getting high impact charities founded than doing it directly. See previous writing on the value of CE and the expected value of a top charity for a more detailed rationale. Additionally, given the rarity of the skillsets we are looking for, a candidate with the right fit is likely to have a strong counterfactual effect. Historically we have been a talent-capped organization. Learning value This job will involve rapid learning and application of knowledge, both directly and creatively applying empirical data (e.g. using historical surveys to derive expected value). It will also involve delving deeply into philosophical issues such as sentience and how to deal with flow through effects . Day-to-day conversations will include talking about crucial considerations, application of self-improvement techniques, and how to deal with epistemic uncertainty. This job will provide strong learning value for people looking to enter a long term career in the EA movement, research, or charity entrepreneurship. Startup culture and flexibility CE has a startup culture of creativity, casual attire, hard work, flexibility, and task diversity. You will be expected to have a strong work ethic, but our organization is consequentialist when it comes to taking days off. EA peer group London is one of the largest hubs of Effective Altruism, with meetups and socials happening every week. There is also a small community built around starting charities from the alumni of the Charity Entrepreneurship incubation program.
