Over the past few years, The Humane League has positioned itself for growth. We have a current staff size of 70+ dispersed across the country and internationally. We are looking to add an experienced leader who is passionate about farmed animal protection and issue organizing to head up our Organizing team. You’ll be a champion of building power through traditional organizing strategies, as well as leveraging data, technology, and innovation to enact change for farmed animals across the United States.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
The National Director of Organizing will develop and implement a national strategy to build power by growing and mobilizing the base of volunteers working toward THL’s mission to end the abuse of animals raised for food. The National Director of Organizing is a new, mission-critical role, acting as the lead strategist for community organizing and engagement on THL’s US leadership team. Your skills in building trusting relationships, developing savvy strategies for mobilizing people and advancing grassroots campaign goals, training and mentoring field leaders, and translating complicated data and technology into campaign-ready tools will be critical to your success. You are excited about travel and getting on the ground, where the work is happening. We want you because you are committed to ending the abuse of animals raised for food and are ready to mobilize people to hold corporations accountable—influencing the world’s biggest companies to create and implement animal welfare policies that abolish the worst forms of abuse and reduce the suffering of billions of animals.
As part of our entirely distributed team, you will work remotely and may be based anywhere in the contiguous United States with broadband internet and access to a major airport. You’ll love the flexibility and opportunity to do national work from your own community.
This is a full-time, remote position with frequent travel. This is a US-based position. We are only able to consider applicants who possess United States work authorization.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and execute campaign strategies
Collaborate with the Campaigns and Corporate Relations teams to develop short-term and long-term strategies to achieve THL’s animal welfare policy goals.
Lead the national grassroots campaign strategy. Assess possible campaign objectives, targets, partners, and strategies at the organizing level.
Build the capacity and vision for national campaigns, manage the planning, implementation and coordination of all grassroots activity.
Mobilize an expanding network
Develop a program to build a strong, engaged base that can be easily mobilized for advocacy and campaign work. Partner with our Development team to build fundraising and organizational capacity.
Support the Digital Mobilization Specialist in designing and managing digital campaigns and increasing the engagement of our online activist team. Help move the growing online community into offline action.
Identify, build, and solidify relationships with coalition partners that align with and promote THL’s priorities and initiatives.
Develop a protocol for using technology (especially via EveryAction) and data to measure and analyze capacity-building efforts.
Train and develop leaders
Collaborate with the Training Specialist to develop a training curriculum for organizing staff to build volunteer leaders in their regions, as well as potential annual or biannual training conferences.
Work with the Communications team and Training Specialist to develop compelling advocacy materials, using data to tell The Humane League’s story.
Oversee the Organizing team
Oversee the entire organizing team, including field organizing, digital mobilization, and the student alliance, and provide coaching, mentorship, and guidance.
Create and implement a professional development program for the organizing staff, including plans for developing individuals’ skills and increasing knowledge of farmed animal issues and campaigns.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Ability to inspire, mobilize and empower diverse groups of people to execute new and complex projects
Strong field organizing background, including experience in advocacy and grassroots campaign planning.
Ability to inspire the Organizing team to support grassroots campaigns and drive forward campaign goals. Must demonstrate ability to present each part of complex projects as part of a shared mission.
Excellence in organizational management with the ability to build relationships and develop high-performing teams and set and achieve strategic objectives.
Experience in training, coaching, and mentoring.
Project management skills with the ability to oversee and structure complex projects, plan backwards, and ensure quality end-results are delivered on or ahead of schedule, without crises.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
Highly proficient in using contemporary office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and the like. Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly and independently. Experience with any of the following is a plus: EveryAction (or comparable eCRM), Google Drive, Apple Keynote, Slack, Asana, Google sites.
Preferred but not required:
Experience with digital campaigns, mobilization strategies, or online organizing for policy and social change, including experience with EveryAction.
Experience in farmed animal advocacy or animal advocacy.
Coalition-building experience.
Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
Experience working remotely.
Starting salary is $64,000.

The Fellow will help develop a volunteer recruitment and retainment plan for The Humane League’s Organizing team.

Prepare for and execute interviews with other non-profit organizations to learn from their experience recruiting and retaining volunteers.
Maintain detailed records of your research and successes and challenges.
Assist the recruitment project team to develop a strategic plan for recruitment and retainment.
Schedule and facilitate meetings with other departments within The Humane League to discuss their involvement in the recruitment and retainment plan, as needed.
Facilitate meetings with the volunteer recruitment project team and to update everyone on the project, get feedback, and delegate responsibilities, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Exemplify a strong commitment to The Humane League’s philosophy and activism methodology.
This fellowship requires a time commitment of 20 hours per week.
The Humane League offers school credit or a paid stipend as compensation for your time. The stipend for this fellowship is $2400.
Must be over 18 years old, have a high school diploma, GED, or college diploma.
Research experience using various qualitative and quantitative methods.
Must be self-directed with the ability to manage projects with multiple moving parts and meet deadlines
Display strong attention to detail, good written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to thrive with minimal direct supervision in a remote workplace.
Must have the ability to represent The Humane League in a professional manner when communicating with other organizations.
