Beyond Carnism is a young, vibrant organization with significant potential to grow its programs and increase its impact under the right leadership. It is also in the process of rebranding to incorporate a broader focus that includes social transformation, relational literacy (understanding of healthy relational dynamics), and mindfulness. We are seeking a talented, dedicated, self-directed individual with a commitment to strategic thinking, animal rights, social justice, relational health, and personal integrity to join our team and help take Beyond Carnism to the next level. POSITION OVERVIEW The Director of Operations oversees administrative and organizational operations, staff, and programs to help expedite Beyond Carnism’s global mission to expose and transform carnism. Because Beyond Carnism is still in an operational startup phase, the Director of Operations will also help develop and streamline key processes and functions, building a more solid, stable, and effective infrastructure. The Director of Operations will also help in the process of Beyond Carnism’s rebranding and will support ongoing strategic analyses. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Staffing The DO will supervise staff (respond to questions, make sure staff are on task, etc.), coordinate and facilitate staff meetings, clarify and revise current job descriptions, determine current and future staffing needs, and help hire candidates. Administration The DO will work closely with the Board and our fiscal sponsor to oversee and manage the budget, and will oversee bookkeeping, accounting, and legal activities that are managed by external consultants. Operations and Functions The DO will develop, revise, and/or streamline operations and functions. The DO will also be responsible for the direction and coordination of the organization’s programs and growth, and oversee the budget and staff. The DO will work with the President to enhance and promote Beyond Carnism’s branding and global presence. Programs The DO will support the President to ensure that programs are and continue to be strategic, and to develop initiatives to assess and improve programmatic impact. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE We are looking for a highly-organized, action-oriented, decisive individual who has a strong commitment to social justice, animal rights, relationality, mindfulness, and the mission of Beyond Carnism. The Director of Operations will embody the core values of Beyond Carnism and should also be self-directed, able to work independently, and possess the following: Bachelor’s degree or higher 3+ years experience in a senior management position, as Chief Operations Officer, Director of Operations or similar, with a demonstrated record of successful management, including program and project development, implementation, and evaluation; short- and long-term strategic planning; and budgetary oversight Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written; familiarity with nonviolent communication a plus Strong familiarity with methods of assessment and metrics Strong familiarity with accounting, including budgetary development Excellent interpersonal skills and proven emotional intelligence to effectively communicate with various constituents including the media, boards, donors, events, chapters, government agencies, and founders Experience and strong track record of effectively supervising staff Excellent strategic and critical thinking skills Experience working in animal rights and thorough knowledge of the movement Familiarity with other social justice issues (including intersectionality) Understanding of and commitment to effective altruism Proven success identifying and implementing technology to drive excellence and best practices preferred Interest in mindfulness a plus To apply for this position, please submit a cover letter and CV to the attention of Flavia D’Erasmo.
